There Is No Compounded Semaglutide in Canada

What is semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — an injectable medication that mimics glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your gut releases after eating. It slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite and improves blood sugar control. In Canada it is sold as Ozempic, as Wegovy, and since 2025 as a generic, and it is prescription-only in every form.
Is generic semaglutide the same as Ozempic?
It contains the same active ingredient at the same strengths. Health Canada authorises a generic only after the manufacturer demonstrates bioequivalence to the reference product, so the two are therapeutically interchangeable. What differs is the delivery device, the brand on the box, and the price — often by more than half.
What is the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?
Both are semaglutide from the same manufacturer. Ozempic is authorised in Canada for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 2.0 mg; Wegovy is authorised for weight management and titrates to 2.4 mg. What are the side effects?
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation are the most commonly reported, usually early in treatment and around dose increases, and usually easing with time.
